New statistics released by the Office for National Statistics
have today revealed that London householders were hit harder
than anywhere else in the country by rising mortgage costs in
2023, with those re-mortgaging facing an average monthly increase
of £458.
In total, home owners in the capital will see an increase of
£5,496 a year in their mortgage payments, according to today's
ONS data.
This is also a factor driving higher rents, as increased costs
are passed on from landlords to tenants.
Today Sadiq has heavily criticised the Tories for their
‘reckless' mini budget in September 2022, When was prime minister. it sent mortgage costs
soaring, and has hit Londoners harder than any other part of the
country.
Sadiq is directly challenging his Tory opponent to apologise to
Londoners for giving her backing to a budget which has increased
housing costs for millions of Londoners.
Despite homeowners in the capital being hardest hit by the
financial chaos in the wake of the mini budget, the Tory
candidate for Mayor of London gave it her full backing, calling
it a matter of 'deep joy' and the mark of a 'proper Conservative
Government'.
The election on 2 May will be a close two-horse race between
hard-right Tory Ms Hall and Sadiq, who is building a fairer,
safer, greener London for everyone.
The choice is also clear when it comes to house building.
While Sadiq has pledged to deliver 40,000 new council homes
by the end of the decade, analysis has shown that the Tory plans
could mean at least 12,000 fewer council homes in the capital.
has promised to ditch all
taller buildings – even modestly-sized urban apartment blocks –
which could mean tens of thousands of fewer homes for Londoners
in total.
Under Sadiq, London has been outbuilding the rest of the country.
Housing completions in the capital have hit the highest level
since the 1930s, according to the Government's own data.
Labour's , said :–
“These new figures are devastating on the impact of Liz
Truss'S reckless budget. It is Londoners who have been
hardest hit with soaring mortgage payments and rents, and the
Tories still refuse to accept responsibility.
“My Tory opponent called the mini budget a moment of deep joy,
but for millions of Londoners it just increased their financial
hardship and deepened the cost-of-living crisis. should finally apologise to
Londoners for the damage it has caused.
“I'm doing all I can as Mayor to tackle the housing crisis,
completing more homes in London than any time since the 1930s,
and pledging to build 40,000 new council homes if re-elected. The
choice is clear 2 May. Only Labour is on the side of London's
homeowners and renters
