Tories politically interfered with the appointment of Toby Young – Angela Rayner

Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on the serious discrepancies uncovered in the hiring of Toby Young to the Office for Students, said:

“These desperate measures demonstrate how far the Tories will go to try and protect their failed market experiment in Higher Education.

“The fact that senior Tories politically interfered with the appointment of Toby Young at every stage, from their former Universities minister recommending Young for the role, to their special advisers at Number 10 blocking other nominees, shows the Government is frightened of any real scrutiny.  

“The Tories’ agenda on Higher Education is failing and they know it. The commissioner’s finding must be taken seriously. Not only is this a breach of the governance code, it is further proof that this Government is failing our universities and our students.”
