Diane Abbott MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, commenting on Amber Rudd’s speech at Tory Party conference, said: “More laws to combat terrorism and violent crime won’t be enough on their own when the Tories are cutting police numbers and cutting budgets.
“The public is rightly worried about the growing threats of terrorism and violent crime, but cutting police numbers by 20,000 is no way to tackle them.
“You can’t have security on the cheap. Rising incidents and new laws both require more resources. Grandstanding speeches at Tory party conference aren’t a substitute for police officers.”

The Tories’ promise on getting net migration down to the “tens of thousands” is emblematic of their failure: repeatedly made and repeatedly broken
“So we will take steps to take net migration back to the levels of the 1990s – tens of thousands a year, not hundreds of thousands.” Conservative Party Manifesto 2010
“5. Control immigration, reducing it to the levels of the 1990s – meaning tens of thousands a year, instead of the hundreds of thousands a year under Labour.” David Cameron, “A contract between the Conservative Party and you”, 30 April 2010
“We will: keep our ambition of delivering annual net migration in the tens of thousands, not the hundreds of thousands” Conservative Party Manifesto 2015
“We continue to have as a government the aim of bringing net migration down to the tens of thousands. It is the ambition we have set in our manifesto.” Theresa May, Today Programme, R4, 21 May 2015
Chair: Just to be clear, what you are saying to this Committee is that you will have met your target within the whole Parliament, that is five years, or is it before the five years? Mrs May: The aim is to meet it by the end of the five-year term of Parliament. Theresa May, Home Affairs Select Committee, 16 December 2015
“I also remain absolutely firm in my belief that we need to bring net migration down to sustainable levels, the government believes that that is tens of thousands; it will take some time to get there.” Theresa May, Prime Minister’s Questions, 20 July 2016

Andrew Marr: And you are completely committed to the tens of thousands target of immigration? Amber Rudd: I’m completely committed to making sure that we reduce it, and yes, tens of thousands. Although it will take some time. Amber Rudd, Andrew Marr Show, 11 September 2016, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs/11091604.pdf
Nick Robinson: Last one on immigration if may you said the target that you’ve set will not happen overnight, how do you define overnight it’s been a six year night so far, another 6 years maybe? Amber Rudd: Well you’re absolutely right I did level with conference yesterday and said this remains...this remains a target but it will not happen overnight. It will take some time is the phrase.
