Gig economy rules must not stifle job creation – IoD

MPs’ report shows need for all parties to commit to completing Taylor Review after election, say business leaders

Responding to today’s report from the House of Commons Work and Pension Committee, which expresses concerns about the gig economy, Seamus Nevin, Head of Employment and Skills Policy at the Institute of Directors, said: 

“MPs are right to investigate whether current employment law is clear enough for companies and individuals in the gig economy, but any new rules must not stifle job creation or the ability of people to work however they choose. Self-employment is a legitimate and increasingly attractive way of working, and while there is rightly concern about misclassification and exploitation, these problems should be addressed in a targeted way after careful consideration.

“The announcement of a snap general election has created some confusion about the status of projects like the Taylor Review into Modern Employment. We would urge all parties to commit to completing the Review when Parliament returns.”
