Scotland stands in solidarity with Ukraine, Minister for Europe
and External Affairs has reaffirmed ahead of
Ukrainian Independence Day on Monday 24 August.
Mr Gethins will today (Sunday 23 August) address Ukrainians and
supporters at the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain
event in Glasgow where he is expected to pay tribute to the
resilience of the Ukrainian people, recognising their
contribution to communities across Scotland, and reiterating the
Scottish Government's unwavering support for Ukraine.
Speaking ahead of the event, he said:
As Ukraine continues to defend its freedom, and the freedoms of
everyone in democratic Europe, its people continue to demonstrate
extraordinary courage, determination and resilience. Their
strength in the face of Russia's aggression, violence and
oppression remains an inspiration to people around the world.
Despite their separation from loved ones, Ukrainians have shown
remarkable resilience and generosity of spirit. Across Scotland,
Ukrainians have enriched our society through the talents, skills,
culture and friendship they have brought to our workplaces,
schools, universities and neighbourhoods.
The bonds that have been formed between Scotland and Ukraine over
recent years are deep and lasting, and they are something of
which we can all be proud.
On this Ukrainian Independence Day, Scotland reaffirms its
solidarity with the people of Ukraine. We are grateful to Ukraine
for defending democracy and stand united in condemnation of the
violence suffered and in solidarity with all that unites us to
ensure we strive for a future founded on peace, freedom and
mutual respect.
