From 10:15 on Tuesday 14 July the House of Lords Science and
Technology Committee will hold a one-off session with the
Chief Executive of UKRI, Sir Ian Chapman.
The Committee will use this session to discuss UKRI's evolving
approach to research and innovation funding, with its new
strategy expected imminently.
The evidence session will take place in Committee Room 4,
Palace of Westminster and will be available to watch live from
10.15 or on demand on Parliamentlive.tv.
Question areas are likely to include:
- Funding issues around Science and Technology Facilities
Council and research infrastructure
- UKRI's strategy and in particular the outcomes that it wants
to refocus UKRI on and how its behaviour will change; data and
analytical capacity in UKRI;
- The Bucket System and its approach to pure and applied
research.
- Possible reforms to the grant application process, in
particular to deal with the rise of AI in applications
- UKRI's role in preserving research capacity in a time of
financial pressures on the higher education system; its
relationship with other actors in the system, like the DfE and
DSIT
- UKRI's role in supporting economic growth, scale-up companies
and reforms to Innovate UK's funding model following on from the
Committee's Bleeding to Death report
- The role of regional and place-based funding in UKRI's grant
allocations
- Setting a clear hierarchy of priorities for UKRI and what
success looks like as its CEO
