How much will the Restoration and Renewal of Parliament cost, and how long will it take - PAC to investigate

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will examine the potential cost and timescale of the Restoration and Renewal (R&R) of Parliament on Thursday 9^th July, at 10.00am.

In February 2026, costed proposals for the R&R of Parliament were published. The cost and timescales for this process vary widely, with estimates for the work ranging from £11.1bn to £56.3bn, and from 19 to 84 years depending on the package chosen. Estimates suggest that each year of delay in undertaking R&R incurs costs of up to £420m.

The Board appointed to oversee R&R has recommended that an initial phase, including major underground and preparatory works, is needed to support the wider programme. These works are expected to last at least seven years and cost up to £3bn.

MPs are likely to use this session as an opportunity to seek greater certainty around the cost, time and governance of this initial phase, and the overall programme.

The PAC could examine the risks in the procurement of temporary accommodation for Parliament. Questions may also focus on the key drivers of the overall cost of the programme, and who will have accountability for its delivery.
