Is boosting growth the main reason for pursuing fiscal devolution, Lords committee to ask witnesses

At 3pm on Tuesday 7 July the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will hear evidence from:

• Kate Ogden, Senior Research Economist, Institute for Fiscal Studies
• Aditi Sriram, Economist, Institute for Public Policy Research.

They will be giving evidence to the committee's inquiry on fiscal devolution in England.

This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords. It will also be streamed live and on demand on Parliament TV.

Questions the committee is likely to cover in this session include:

• What are the channels through which fiscal devolution could boost economic growth?
• What should be the guiding principles when deciding which taxes to assign or to devolve to local areas?
• What factors should guide decisions when deciding how much revenues should be equalised across places?
• Are there any other changes to the UK's fiscal framework that may be needed to facilitate devolving fiscal powers?
• What powers and responsibilities should rest with the different tiers and types of government as outlined by the English Devolution Act?
