As the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero faces
concerning budget
reductions to help fund defence spending, the Committee
will question Climate Minister on the implications for the
UK's priorities and global standing as a leader on climate
action.
The Committee is holding a short inquiry into the UK's role in
international climate policy. In this second and final session,
the Committee will seek to understand how the UK can build on and
strengthen its climate leadership on the global stage in an
increasingly challenging fiscal, economic and political
environment.
International climate governance, and the way states engage with
it, is changing, while the role of non-state actors is growing.
The Committee will examine emerging proposals for reforms to the
UN COP process and consider new forms of climate leadership, such
as the coalitions of the willing that led the first
global summit on phasing out fossil fuels that recently took
place in Santa Marta, Colombia.
