Impacts on agri-food industry of dynamic alignment with EU SPS rules to be examined by Lords committee

On Tuesday 19 May from 11:00am, the House of Lords European Affairs Committee will continue its inquiry into dynamic alignment. 

Across two sessions with key stakeholders and experts, the Committee will examine the proposed Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement currently under negotiation between the UK and EU, which is expected to include a UK commitment to dynamic alignment with EU SPS rules.

From 11:00am the Committee will hear from:

• Tom Bradshaw, President, National Farmers' Union of England and Wales

• John Powell, Chief Executive, British Meat Processors Association

• Richard Ballantyne, Chief Executive, British Ports Association

At 11:50 the Committee will hear from

• Professor Emily Lydgate, Professor of Environmental Law, Co-Director, UK Trade Policy Observatory, and Deputy Director, the Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy, University of Sussex

• Catherine McBride OBE, CEO, Great British Business Council 

Members are likely to explore a range of issues including:

• the practical and trade effects of an SPS Agreement;

• the implications of taking on particular aspects of the EU SPS rulebook;

• the legal and practical preparations that might be required before dynamic alignment comes into operation;

• Parliamentary scrutiny of dynamic alignment
