NHS staff, union representatives and clinical leaders have
described a pattern of growing aggression towards frontline NHS
workers, including serious physical assaults, threats, and
abusive behaviour.
The London Assembly Health Committee has raised serious concerns
about violence and abuse directed at NHS staff, following a
recent evidence session. Witnesses emphasised the significant
emotional, psychological and professional impact these incidents
are having on staff, many of whom reported long recovery periods,
trauma, and concerns about ongoing safety.
The Committee also heard criticisms of the
‘Right Care, Right Person' strategy, which is intended to ensure
vulnerable people receive the most appropriate response. The
evidence highlighted operational pressures and gaps in service
capacity, impacting both healthcare workers and patient safety.
In letters to both the
Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the
Secretary of State for Health and Social Care,
the Health Committee is calling for better
protection for staff, improved reporting systems and an urgent
Government review of the ‘Right Care, Right Person'
strategy/initiative.
Chairman of the London Assembly Health Committee, AM, said:
“Frontline NHS staff are doing extraordinary work in
challenging circumstances, yet too many are being subjected to
unacceptable levels of violence and abuse.”
“We heard strong evidence that inconsistent police responses,
gaps in training and resources for NHS security teams, and
unresolved issues with the rollout of the ‘Right Care, Right
Person' strategy/initiative are placing additional pressure on
healthcare workers and allowing dangerous situations to
escalate.
“No one should face threats, intimidation or assault simply
for doing their job. We need a coordinated approach across
Government, the Met and the NHS to ensure staff are safe,
reporting is easy and meaningful, and offenders face real
consequences. Without this, we risk a growing culture of fear
that harms staff wellbeing and undermines patient care.”
