The Conservatives are today [Wednesday 25th March] exposing Labour's council tax raid on households across England as they are hit another sharp rise in bills. The Labour Government is presiding over above-inflation increases that will pile further pressure on families already struggling with the cost of living. New figures show that the average Band D council tax bill for 2026–27 will rise to £2,392, an increase of £111 or 4.9 per cent on the previous year. This follows a £109 rise last year, meaning families are facing back-to-back increases. Overall council tax receipts are climbing by £2.7 billion this year. These increases have been driven by decisions taken in Whitehall, with Labour Ministers shifting the burden onto local authorities while avoiding accountability for the impact on taxpayers. Despite repeated promises to ease the cost of living, Labour Ministers have refused to consider the impact of rising council tax since July 2024 on the cost of living. This is despite Keir Starmer's pledge in January 2026 to make the cost of living a priority this year for the Labour Government. Analysis also shows that the largest council tax increases this year are being implemented by Labour, Liberal Democrat and Reform councils and Labour Mayors including a ten percent increase in Council Tax by Andy Burnham. In contrast, Conservative-run local authorities have the lowest average Band D council tax increases in 2026-27. Conservative candidates across the country are standing on a platform that is firmly on the side of hard-working people. We have a plan to abolish business rates for tens of thousands of high street businesses, cut bills with our cheap power plan and take Back our Streets by recruiting 10,000 more police officers by finding £47 billion pounds worth of savings from welfare and the civil service. Sir James Cleverly MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, said: “Under Labour, council tax is going through the roof, with bills up by £111 on the average Band D property this year alone. These are tax hikes cooked up in Whitehall with town halls left to take the blame. “Keir Starmer promised to ease the cost of living and freeze council tax, yet families now face back-to-back hikes and a total council tax take rising by £2.7 billion, another broken promise. “Conservatives will always back hard-working people, delivering better services while keeping council tax down, while Labour, Lib Dem and Reform councils are pushing through the highest rises.” Kevin Hollinrake MP, Chairman of the Conservative Party, said: "The Conservative Party has changed, and our plan will make a difference where you live. Our plan to abolish business rates, scrap stamp duty on the family home, cut bills with our Cheap Power Plan and take back our streets will make a real difference where you live. "Only the Conservatives are on the side of hard-working people. If you want a strong council which works hard for you, with good public services that cost you less, on 7 May you must vote Conservative to get Britain working again." ENDS Notes to Editors:
