CMS Committee presses Government on support for live comedy sector

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has called for an update on the progress the Government is making on its commitments to support the live comedy sector.

The Committee first wrote to the Government last summer, following an evidence session in April, arguing that the unique nature of the live comedy sector must no longer be ignored to allow it to be properly considered for funding alongside other creative industries.

Ahead of Live Comedy Day on April 1, today's letter to Creative Industries Minister Ian Murrayasks for an update on the Government's response and the progress being made on issues including funding and working conditions.

It also asks about the Government's commitment to a comedy roundtable meeting, the appointment of a freelance champion and support for extending the grassroots music levy to the live comedy sector.

The live comedy evidence session was proposed by the Live Comedy Association as part of the Committee's State of Play inquiry, which invited pitches from across the culture, media and sporting world in order to shine a light on previously unheard issues and challenges.
