Grant boost to cover almost half the cost of installing EV chargers for households and businesses

• Renters, landlords and businesses will be able to claim up to half the cost of installing an electric charger - saving them up to £500 as grants extended for a further final year.
• Increased charging grants mean installation costs for many drivers will be slashed, unlocking home charging for as little as 2p per mile.
• Updates to grant offering simplifies system, making it easier for people and businesses to find the right support and access savings. 

Renters, flat owners, homeowners without driveways, and businesses will be able to save up to £500 when installing Electric Vehicle (EV) charge points, thanks to an over 40% increase in charge point grant amounts announced today (Wednesday 25 February). 

The uplift will cover almost half the cost of a typical charge point installation until March 2027, helping thousands more drivers access cheaper domestic electricity rates at home or work to power their car for as little as 2p per mile – that's the equivalent of London to Birmingham for £3.50. 

Expanded access to home charging will help more households make the switch and UK businesses gear up for the EV revolution, as latest figures show EV drivers can save up to £1,400 on running costs versus a comparable petrol car when accessing cheaper domestic rates. 

The move is the latest in a raft of action from the Government to tackle two of the biggest barriers to driving electric – upfront costs and worries about finding somewhere to charge.

Over 55,000 drivers have already saved thousands buying a new EV thanks to the Government's £2 billion Electric Car Grant (ECG), which is offering savings of up to £3,750 across some of the biggest auto brands, and backing the UK auto sector, including the Nissan Leaf made at the firm's Sunderland plant.

Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, Keir Mather said: 

"We're taking action to make EV ownership the affordable choice for everyone – not just those with driveways. Bigger grants mean families, flat owners, renters and small businesses can now install a charger for almost half the usual cost, with home charging costing as little as 2p a mile.

“Combined with our Electric Car Grant which has saved over 55,000 drivers thousands off the price of a new EV whilst boosting sales for carmakers, and record funding for our national public charging network, we're backing the EV revolution for drivers, businesses, and industry.”

The updates will also simplify the current EV charge point support schemes available by reducing eight grant types down to five, streamlining the system so people can navigate and select schemes and discounts more easily.

Last year, a £25m scheme was also launched making it easier for residents without driveways to install home chargers. Accessed through local authorities, the scheme supports the installation of discreet, embedded pavement channels and is additional to the expanded charge point grant. This means those with on street parking could get help with installing the charger and the cross-pavement ​channel.

The following updates will be introduced from 1 April 2026: 

• People living in rented accommodation, flat owners, residential landlords, households with on-street parking, and businesses will all be able to receive higher grants of up to £500 per charge point, rising from the previous discount of £350. 
• Schools will be eligible for grants of up to £2,000 per socket, building on 3,700 sockets installed to date. 

Alongside the ECG and home and workplace charging grants, the Government is expanding the national 88,500 strong public charge point network. In total, £600 million was announced last year to accelerate the charging rollout, and this funding builds on the 100,000 additional new public chargers the Government is already helping councils install in the coming years.

Councils will receive funding for the next three years to help them boost local charging infrastructure, alongside the continuation of a Government funded support service for local authorities which helps ensure charge point installations and locations best serve communities.

Last month, the Department for Transport launched its new ‘Get that electric feeling' campaign to help drive uptake in EVs by highlighting the benefits of going electric, including savings of up to £1,400 on running costs. 

Tina McKenzie, Policy Chair, Federation of Small Businesses said:

“Many small businesses want to switch to electric vehicles, with half of small businesses (51%) saying that more charging infrastructure would incentivise them to make the switch.

“Small firms want to cut their emissions and reduce their fuel bills and removing or lowering the barriers which currently tip the scales against electric vehicle adoption can only be a good thing – for small businesses, for the economy, and for the planet.”

Ben Beadle, Chief Executive of the National Residential Landlords Association, said:

“Almost nine in ten landlords with a suitable property would install EV charge points if a tenant asks them to undertake this work.

“Given the extent of landlords' willingness to provide them, we welcome the Government's plans to encourage more widespread installation of these points across the sector.

“We urge landlords to make best use of the grants now available where it is feasible for them to do so”.

Home and Workplace Chargepoint Grants 

• From 1 April 2026, the Department is increasing funding available for renters, flat-owners, residents without private driveways, landlords and workplaces from £350 to up to £500. These grant schemes are titled as follows: 

• Charge point grant for renters and flat owners
• Charge point grant for residential landlords
• Charge point grant for households with on-street parking
• Workplace Charging Scheme

• The schools grant – known as the Workplace Charging Scheme for State-Funded Education Institutions - will be extended for another year, with grants of up to £2,000 available.
• The following grants will close as planned at the end of the financial year to simplify the grant system. These schemes and their target recipients have been folded into the newly expanded grants which landlords, staff and fleets will be able to access:

• EV Infrastructure grant for residential landlords
• Infrastructure grant for staff and fleets
• Charge point grant for commercial landlords

• Whilst some grants are closing, there is no change to overall funding for charge point grants. To boost uptake and cut the admin associated with multiple grants the Government is re-targeting and simplifying the system.

Government action to expand the UK charging network  

• There are over 88,500 public chargers already live across the country, with the fastest growth occurring outside London in places like Yorkshire, Wales, the West Midlands, and the East of England.
• Last year, the Government announced an additional £600 million to accelerate the rollout of more charge points. £600m is made up of £400m from SR25 (11 June 2025) and £200m at Autumn Budget 2025 (26 November 2025).
• This funding complements the £400 million Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) scheme allocated to help councils deliver over 100,000 new public chargers in the coming years. 
• Public authorities including Councils will continue to have access to a centrally funded expert support service to deliver public charging facilities through to 2029.
• Rural public charge points in England are up 26% overall on the year, and 920,000 homes have access to at-home charging in England alone.
• Last year a £25m scheme to make it easier for residents without driveways to install home chargers was launched, enabling them to charge up for as little as 2p per mile. This £25m scheme helps fund the pavement channel specifically and is in addition to the newly expanded charge point grant for those with on-street parking.
• The Government is also proposing to cut red tape and remove planning permission requirements for home chargers which could speed up applications for cross pavement chargers and could save drivers up to £250 on installation costs. 
• The Government has also announced a review into the cost of public electric vehicle charging, looking at the impact of energy prices, wider cost contributors, and options for lowering these costs for consumers.
