Written Statement by MS, First Minister
The launch of Transport for Wales's long-term plan for rail in
Wales, ‘Today, Tomorrow, Together: A vision for rail across
Wales and Borders' on the 18th February 2026
marks a seminal moment for rail in Wales.
Jointly backed by both the Welsh and UK Governments, this is a
£14bn package of bold, generational schemes that will transform
travel, connect communities and power our economy.
‘Today, Tomorrow, Together' sets out our vision and intent for
rail in Wales, with a pipeline of enhancements covering the
length and breadth of Welsh railways, that embraces both the
non-devolved and the Welsh Government owned networks.
It is the result of partnership, ambition and an unwavering
determination to deliver for passengers in Wales. It builds on
the UK Government's £445m commitment for rail in Wales announced
in the Spending Review and puts us in an unprecedented position
to deliver the next chapter of rail in Wales.
This follows Welsh Government's £1.1bn investment to upgrade and
electrify the Core Valley Lines, £800m investment to deliver a
brand-new fleet of trains and the launch of the Network North
Wales programme. We are already seeing the benefits of this
investment, with Transport for Wales demonstrating record
performance, increasing passenger satisfaction and
growing passenger demand.
It is crucial that we build on this momentum and the launch of
the Transport for Wales vision backed by a funding
commitment from the UK Government is another significant
milestone on our journey to transform rail in Wales.
