Lords Financial Services Regulation Committee: What are the advantages of stablecoins as opposed to tokenised deposits?

At 10am on Wednesday 11 February the House of Lords Financial Services Regulation Committee will hear evidence from:

• Professor Simon Gleeson, University of Oxford.

At 11.00am, the committee will hear from:

• Professor Kern Alexander, University of Zurich.

Both witnesses will be giving evidence to the committee's inquiry on the growth and proposed regulation of stablecoins in the UK.

This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords and streamed live and on demand on Parliament TV.

Topics the committee is likely to cover in this session include:

• What are the key use cases for stablecoins?
• Whether the Bank of England's and FCA's proposed regimes effectively address the different use cases.
• The risks of the proposed regulatory approach from the Bank of England.
• Approach to the regulation of stablecoins in the EU as introduced through the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).
• How elements that cover stablecoins in the GENIUS Act and MiCA compare, including any areas of significant divergence.
• How witnesses expect the use of stablecoins in payments systems - in retail and wholesale ‘real world' payments - to develop both in the US and in the UK.
