Migration experts to give evidence on settlement, citizenship and integration

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will continue its inquiry into settlement, citizenship, and integration by questioning experts working in the field of migration and asylum.  

The session will focus on the Government's recent policy proposals and the Home Office's responsibilities.  

Giving evidence will be:

• David Goodhart, Head of Demography, Immigration and Integration at Policy Exchange  

• Alp Mehmet MVO, Chair of Migration Watch UK  

• Shaina Sangha, Immigration and Asylum Researcher, Institute for Government   

Possible questions include: 

• What is the intention behind the Government's recent policy proposals and will the proposals have the desired effect?  

• Can the Home Office effectively oversee proposed changes?  

• Do immigration, integration, and citizenship matters fit in well at the Home Office given their other responsibilities, and what are the implications for policy formulation?  

• How does the Home Office monitor those on different visas (student, spouse, worker etc) and how does it ensure compliance and prevent overstaying?  

• What role should settlement/citizenship policy play in integration?  

• How do we effectively integrate those migrating to the UK. Does the UK have an integration strategy? What would one look like?  

• Is citizenship more important to the individual, society, or the state?  

• What are the impacts of current migration patterns on public services?
