Conservative response to Labour’s rental reforms commencing in May

Sir James Cleverly MP, Shadow Housing Secretary, said:

“It's obvious Labour's rental reforms will drive landlords from the market, reduce supply and send prices up for tenants.

“The changes will hamstring landlords who are stuck with bad tenants, and ban the fixed-term tenancies that allow landlords to plan ahead. For many, renting out their property will no longer be worth it. The government claims the changes will give tenants security, but with a start date of May 2026, we are now set for a six-month fire sale with tenants forced out at short notice - and working people will suffer the consequences.

“Labour failed to think through what this Bill would do. Only the Conservatives will deliver a system that works for both tenants and landlords.”
