Economy Minister Dr. today visited the new
teaching and learning spaces in Timber Quay at Ulster University
Derry~Londonderry.
The Minister was joined by Ulster University Vice Chancellor,
Professor Paul Bartholomew, and Magee Taskforce Vice Chair Nicola
Skelly to tour the modern teaching spaces.
The Minister met with students and staff, noting the remarkable
phase 1 transformation since her previous visit in February,
when the acquisition of the Timber Quay property was announced.
Minister Archibald said: “The first phase of the
refurbishment of Timber Quay marks a key milestone in expanding
higher education in the North West. I commend Ulster University
for its work in transforming the first part of the space, which
will support hundreds of students and staff and help us move
toward our goal of welcoming 10,000 students to Magee.
“This investment reflects our commitment to the Magee
Expansion Taskforce's priorities and reinforces Magee's role as a
hub for learning and innovation. My Department will continue
working closely with Ulster University to build the
infrastructure and support systems needed for long-term growth in
the region.”
With the new academic year underway, Timber Quay became home
to computing laboratory-based teaching and learning environments
for new and returning students from the School of Computing,
Engineering and Intelligent Systems.
From early 2026, a second stage of development will introduce
further teaching spaces for students, ready for September of the
same year.
Timber Quay is equipped with the latest technology for the most
progressive learning experience, including computer systems,
audio, video and streaming installations, interactive displays,
smartboards, and modular seating. Over the coming years, the full
site from the first floor upwards will be home to Ulster
University staff and students.
Professor Paul Bartholomew said: “The development of the first
phase of Timber Quay is a clear example of our expansion in
action, extending the footprint of Ulster University to the
quayside in Derry~Londonderry.
“This high-quality facility provides an outstanding environment
for our students and staff, designed to meet the highest academic
and technical standards. It underlines our long-term commitment
to growth in Derry~Londonderry and to enhancing the
educational and economic vitality of the wider region.”
Nicola Skelly added: “The Taskforce was invited to develop
and oversee a plan to achieve the NDNA and Programme for
Government agreements to expand Magee to 10,000 students as soon
as possible.
“Acquiring and then refurbishing Timber Quay to welcome new
students within seven months is an important step and
demonstrates the Minister's and Ulster University's commitment to
see that plan delivered in full.”
