Home Affairs Committee report: Police response to
the summer 2024 disorder
The Home Affairs Committee has published the Government's
response to its report into the police response to the summer
2024 disorder.
The response sets out the Government's reaction to the
committee's recommendations, covering issues including social
media, police resilience and strategic processes.
Following the response, the Home Affairs Committee has written to
the Government asking for more information on how it intends to
build capacity for gathering social media intelligence at a
national and police force level. The committee had called for a
renewed focus by policing to address the scale and complexity of
social media activity related to crime and disorder.
Chair of the Home Affairs Committee, Dame said:
“I am pleased that the Government has responded positively to the
recommendations in our report. We await the policing White Paper
to see exactly how it plans to reform police services to make
them better prepared for future disorder if it occurs.
“We do however need to see more detail in how the Government will
ramp up the capacity of police forces to deal with how social
media can organise and spread disorder. This capability needs to
be embedded at a national and local level, as a regular part of
policing. We have written to the Policing Minister to ask for
more detail about how it plans to include this in wider
reforms.”
