The Health and Social Care Committee has today sent two letters
to Department of Health and Social Care; one on the subject of
the cross party talks on social care, and another about overseas
recruitment for care workers.
Letter on cross-party
talks on social care
The letter from the Committee to the Health and Social Care
Secretary asks why the Government appears to have moved
responsibility for holding the cross party talks on social care
to the Casey Commission and why no explicit reference was made to
the need to build political consensus or hold cross-party talks
in the Casey Commission's terms of reference.
Letter on overseas
recruitment of social care workers
The letter sent by the Committee to the Home Secretary and the
Health and Social Care Secretary on the changes to the care
worker visas asks a range of questions including; whether the
Government will be producing an impact assessment for the change,
what reassurance will be provided to the care sector that there
will be sufficient alternative measures in place to support
providers to fill vacancies, including upskilling the domestic
workforce and telling a more positive story about care work as a
career, as well as questions about the Adult Social Care Fair Pay
Agreement. The MPs' letter also asks what other options were
considered to reduce the number of care worker visas, before the
option of ending overseas recruitment was decided upon.
