Justice Committee to hear evidence on the day to day running of prisons

The Justice Committee will hear from the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, the National Chair of the Independent Monitoring Boards and HM Chief Inspector of Prisons during the third evidence session of its inquiry into rehabilitation and resettlement: ending the cycle of reoffending.

MPs on the cross-party committee chaired by Labour MP Andy Slaughter will explore whether the day-to-day running of prisons is conducive to running a rehabilitative regime. Discussion is expected to focus on topics including staffing, governance, buildings and their maintenance, and contracting. 

The session is also likely to touch upon the issues of time out of cell and the impact of prison populations in delivering rehabilitation programmes. The previous two inquiry evidence sessions explored the prison education system and heard from organisations and charities working across prisons and probation.
