Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill - documents (May 2)

Information relating to the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which was introduced to the House of Commons by Kim Leadbeater MP on 16 October 2024.

The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is a private member's bill. It was introduced in the House of Commons by the sponsor of the bill, Kim Leadbeater MP. The bill makes provision for adults who are terminally ill and reasonably expected to die within 6 months to request, and lawfully be provided with, assistance to end their own life.

The government is neutral on the substantive policy questions relevant to how the law in this area could change and on the principle of assisted dying. However, the government does have a responsibility to make sure any legislation that passes through Parliament is workable, effective and enforceable.

As such, the government has produced documents intended to provide an assessment of the potential impacts of the bill. These documents have been prepared independently by the Department of Health and Social Care and Ministry of Justice and do not provide a policy position on assisted dying.
