House of Lords Science and Technology Committee: How can the Government make funding for basic research sustainable?

On Tuesday 22 April the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will continue its new inquiry into Financing and Scaling UK Science and Technology: Innovation, Investment, Industry.   

The committee will hear from:  

10:15am  

• Sir Paul Nurse, Director of the Crick Institute  

11.15am 

• Sir John Bell, Director of the Ellison Institute of Technology  

Committee members will ask both prominent figures in science policy about their experiences in science and technology policy and industrial strategy, including Sir Paul Nurse's second Review of the Research, Development, and Innovation Landscape, and Sir John Bell's work with the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy. 

Topics expected to be covered in the session include:  

• How well previous governments have responded to reviews and strategies such as the second review of the RDI Landscape, and the Life Sciences Industrial Strategies 

• How the government can make funding for basic research sustainable and how R&D can advocate for itself in difficult economic circumstances 

• What the wider research landscape can learn from innovative institutional structures like the Crick Institute and the Ellison Institute 

• How the UK encourages domestic companies, particularly in the life sciences, to scale and grow 

• What UK research, development and innovation ecosystems can learn from international comparisons
