Communities Minister has opened the newly
redeveloped library in Fivemiletown, County Tyrone.
The library, which first opened in 1978, has been rebuilt and
extended to meet the changing needs of the local community,
increasing sustainability through the installation of energy
efficient heating and lighting measures and providing increased
accessibility with a Changing Places facility.
Following a tour of the new library, Communities Minister
said: “Fivemiletown Library has been transformed
into a bright, modern space offering a full range of library
services. There really is something for everyone in the
community, young and old, with flexible spaces for reading,
studying and hosting events.
“I know how important a library can be for the local
community and I have no doubt that Fivemiletown Library will be a
vibrant, central hub where people can meet, work and connect.
I'm particularly pleased to hear about the wide range of
initiatives available, from book clubs, 1-2-1 e-clinics to
promote digital skills, yoga and mindfulness sessions to author
visits and exhibitions and talks about the local
area.
“The building itself is a great example of how
sustainable design can create welcoming spaces which will fit the
needs of the local community for years to come. I am
confident that the revitalised library will continue to play a
central role in Fivemiletown, attracting new users of all
ages.”
Speaking at the event, Dr Jim O'Hagan, Libraries NI Chief
Executive said: “The official opening of Fivemiletown Library is
more than just the unveiling of a new building—it is an
investment in the future of this community, made possible by the
generous support of the Minister and the Department for
Communities. This achievement is a testament to the dedication of
our staff, contractors, and the unwavering support of the local
community. We extend our sincere thanks to the Minister, the
Department, and everyone who contributed their time, effort and
enthusiasm to bring this vision to life.
“It is especially fitting that this opening coincides with the
inaugural Fivemiletown Cultural Heritage Festival – Tracks From
the Past, a celebration of the area's rich heritage and stories.
With enhanced library services and a thoughtfully designed
sensory garden, this outstanding facility will be a valuable
space for everyone in the community to learn, to engage with
others, and to be inspired.”
Fivemiletown Library hosts a range of events and initiatives
during the week and has extended opening hours on Tuesday
