Matt Western elected Chair of Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy

Matt Western has been elected Chair of the Joint Committee on National Security Strategy (JCNSS).

The Committee scrutinises the structures for Government decision-making on national security, particularly the role of the National Security Council and the National Security Adviser.

It is made up of Members of both Houses of Parliament. In the previous Parliament, it was chaired by Dame Margaret Beckett.

Matt Western MP said:

“I am pleased to be elected Chair and thank my colleagues for their support.

“This is a critical time for our national security. Ransomware, cyber attacks and threats to our infrastructure are reaching unprecedented levels, causing growing concern to both policymakers and the public.

“Although often hidden away, these issues could have a significant impact on the everyday lives of UK citizens. The Committee plays a key role in establishing clarity on how they can be countered; I look forward to beginning that vital work.”
