1.5 million new homes housing target – Matthew Pennycook MP, Minister of Housing and Planning, questioned by Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee

On Wednesday morning, the Housing, Communities and Local Government (HCLG) Committee will question Matthew Pennycook MP, Minister of Housing and Planning, on the Government's plans to deliver on the commitment of 1.5 million new homes by the end of this Parliament.

The cross-party group of MPs will ask questions around the Government's proposed reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework, including changes to how local housing targets are calculated.  They are also likely to examine issues around Green and ‘grey' belt development, New Towns, as well as plans to deliver more affordable housing.

Further information: On 30 July 2024, Rt Hon Angela Rayner MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government (the Department), announced a consultation on reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) intended to support the Government's manifesto commitment of building 1.5 million homes during this Parliament. 

The consultation closed on 24 September 2024. It comprised a consultation paper, and a version of the current (December 2023) National Planning Policy Framework showing indicative changes for consultation. The Government has not yet published the consultation outcome.
