Marking the return of Parliament this week, Cabinet opened with a
discussion of the government's packed legislative agenda to
support the Prime Minister's promise to the country to deliver
change.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of fixing the
foundations of the economy and making progress on vital reforms
to improve people's lives and drive growth as the number one
priority of this Government. The Prime Minister welcomed updates
from the Leaders of the Commons and Lords on business in
Parliament this week to grow our economy, including progress with
the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill which will
complete its remaining Commons' stages today to overhaul rail
services and improve UK connectivity, the Budget Responsibility,
Bill which will complete its Commons' stages tomorrow and ensure
governments cannot play fast and loose with the UK's finances,
and Second Readings of the Great British Energy Bill (Thursday)
and Crown Estate Bill (yesterday) which will unlock investment in
green energy to drive growth and support high skill jobs.
Cabinet then turned to a discussion of the imminent publication
of the Grenfell Inquiry Phase Two Report tomorrow, looking at the
causes and context that led to the tragedy. The Prime Minister
and Deputy Prime Minister spoke of how the events in Dagenham
last week were a further reminder of how important it is to learn
the lessons and ensure that the mistakes that were made never
happen again, and that the ongoing pain of the families and loved
ones of the 72 people who lost their livesremain in the forefront
of his mind.
Cabinet also received an update from the Health Secretary and
Chief Medical Officer Professor on the Government's response
to Mpox.
Finally, the Home Secretary updated Cabinet on her department's
work to deliver on the Safer Streets Mission and the response to
the violent disorder this Summer. She paid tribute to the
response of the police and criminal justice system to bring
people who were responsible for the violent disorder to account
and updated Cabinet on the government's mission to halve violence
against women and girls, halve knife crime, crack down on
anti-social behaviour and restore trust and confidence in the
police. The Prime Minister concluded with reflections on his
visits to Southport over the summer and the work to deal with the
disorder and the incredible response of people in communities
affected.
