‘Economic stability can only come with change’, says Rachel Reeves as she pledges tough spending rules, to grow the economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible

Rachel Reeves, Labour's Shadow Chancellor, has declared that “economic stability can only come with a change of government.”

Speaking ahead of the first full week of election campaigning, Rachel Reeves said “this election is a chance for the British people to pass judgement on the past fourteen years of economic chaos under the Conservatives and to vote for change.”

Reeves accuses Rishi Sunak of “gaslighting” the British people about the state of the economy and “taking no responsibility for his part in burning down the house.”

Rachel Reeves, Labour's Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, said:  

“This election is a chance for the British people to pass judgement on the past fourteen years of economic chaos under the Conservatives and to vote for change.

“Since the election was called Rishi Sunak has been gaslighting the British people about the state of the economy and taking no responsibility for his part in burning down the house. It was the Conservatives who crashed the economy, put pensions in peril and sent the average monthly mortgage repayments up by £240 a month. Inflation rose on Rishi Sunak's watch and has only fallen because of hikes in people's mortgage bills. 

“No one is going to give a box of matches back to the arsonists whose burnt the house down.

“On 4 July the British people have the chance to vote for change. The next Labour government will deliver economic stability with tough spending rules, so we can grow our economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible.”
