UK must confirm support for immediate ceasefire UN resolution, say SNP

The UK government must meet its humanitarian obligations by confirming its support for a UN Security Council resolution on an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the SNP’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Brendan O'Hara MP, has said.

US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, confirmed earlier today that the US has submitted a draft resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire” and a release of all hostages.

Commenting, Brendan O'Hara MP said:

“With every day that passes more innocent men, women, and children are shot, bombed, or starved to death in a war that should have ended long ago.

“The UK government, in their refusal to back a ceasefire, have been complicit in the suffering faced by ordinary Palestinians. That must change with the UK confirming its support for an immediate ceasefire and voting in favour of a Security Council resolution calling for one.

“By refusing to do so the UK government would be failing to meet their humanitarian obligations and turning their cheek to a conflict that has so far claimed the lives of over 30,000 Palestinians.

“No more innocent civilians should have to die or face extreme suffering before this UK government sees sense and finally acts on its responsibility to help secure a lasting peace.

“No more equivocation, no more delay - the UK must do what is right now.”
