TUC hails union win on minimum wage

New laws to close loophole which allow rogue employers to exploit and under-pay live-in domestic workers

Commenting on regulations passing in the Commons, which will close the legal loophole allowing employers to avoid paying live-in domestic workers the minimum wage, TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak said:

“No matter your background or where you come from, everyone deserves to be paid fairly.

"But for too long, rogue employers have been allowed to exploit live-in domestic workers – paying them less than the minimum wage.

"Many of these workers are migrant workers who have little other option but to accept poorly paid work.

“That's why unions and other civil society groups have long been campaigning to end this injustice and make sure everyone gets paid the minimum wage. And it’s why the Low Pay Commission made this recommendation to government.

"It's only right that ministers have finally listened and are set to close this loophole."
