The SNP Government is delivering major progress on attainment, as
new figures reveal the number of pupils in Primary schools from
both the most and least deprived areas achieving expected levels
of literacy and numeracy has reached a record high.
The Achievement of Curriculum for Excellence Level (ACEL)
statistics show that in numeracy, 79.6% of pupils reached the
levels expected in 2022/23 a rise of 0.5 percentage points
compared to the previous high in 2018/19.
Literacy levels also saw a rise of 0.4% from the previous high in
2018/19 to 72.2%.
The gap between the number of primary pupils from the most and
least deprived areas achieving expected levels in literacy also
dropped to the lowest on record.
Figures for Secondary schools also showed improvement in
attainment across the board, with the gap from most and least
deprived areas also reducing.
The SNP has said that this shows that the Scottish Government’s
investment is improving outcomes in education and delivering real
progress.
Commenting, said:
“I welcome these new ACEL figures which show demonstrate
real improvements in attainment in our
schools – showing attainment in primary at record highs
and major progress tackling the attainment gap. The
Scottish Government invests more per pupil than in any other part
of the UK – and these figures show without a shadow of a doubt
that this investment is working.
“These results are testament to the hard work of our pupils and
the dedication of our teaching workforce, who have delivered this
strong set of results in a challenging time for schools
post-Covid pandemic, and in the context of over a decade of
UK Government austerity.
“We know there is still work to be done to drive further
standards up further in our schools, but these figures show real
and meaningful improvement that cannot not be
dismissed. When it comes to education, the SNP’s ambition for
excellence is backed up by its record of delivery – whereas
the Labour and the Tories have spent the last week talking
Scotland’s schools down.
“It is time for the opposition to engage with the substance on
Scottish education – rather than launching knee-jerk political
attacks and ignoring the achievements of teachers and
pupils.”
