Today (Thursday 30 November), , Leader of the Labour Party,
, Shadow Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary, and
, Shadow Foreign Secretary, will
arrive in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, ahead of a series of
engagements and events with political leaders, business and civil
society from around the world at the COP28 climate summit.
Against a backdrop of the ongoing cost of living crisis,
downgraded growth forecasts, and energy security crises that have
hit families and businesses across Britain, will attend COP28 to show that
a Labour Government will be “fighting for Britain” to bring in
jobs and investment, which will cut bills, make us energy
independent, and tackle the climate crisis.
The Labour Leader will emphasise his view that the push to net
zero is an economic opportunity. He will assert that not only is
Labour now the party of fiscal responsibility, but also the party
of business, and the only UK party with a plan to pragmatically
harness the opportunities of the energy transition. will say that Labour’s mission
to make Britain a clean energy superpower, generating clean
electricity by 2030, is about pragmatism, not ideology, and will
press that cheap renewables like solar and wind are now many
times cheaper than gas, with the UK brilliantly placed to be
world leaders in them. He will say that there is a global race on
for the jobs and growth potential from these sectors and that
with a Labour government, Britain can win it.
In a marked shift from the Prime Minister , Starmer will also say that
with Labour, “Britain will be back on the world stage” as a
reliable and ambitious partner to lead on solving the biggest
challenges our world face. He will say that the trip is signal of
Labour’s intent to rebuild Britain’s global reputation, to
deliver cheaper bills, energy security and more good jobs at
home.
The Labour leader will have a series of meetings over two days
with heads of states and business leaders, as well as being
hosted for an international investors roundtable (Friday).
will say that Britain should
play a leading international role in the drive to net zero to
harness the extraordinary benefits that the energy transition
could offer the UK. The Labour politicians will carry out a
series of diplomatic engagement, pressing their belief that
global relations go hand in hand with domestic policy.
Starmer will draw a stark divide with and the Conservative
Government, noting that was shamed into going to
COP27, and has used the year since to double down on his failures
– turning off businesses and investors, failing to cut energy
bills and make the UK energy secure, and underlining both at home
and abroad that his party’s interests and sowing political
division come before leadership on the biggest challenges the
world faces.
During his visit to the summit, will set out some of the
planks of an international climate strategy under a Labour
Government. He will show that with leadership and partnership on
the world stage, Britain can win the global race for investment
and jobs, to cut bills, make us energy independent, and play our
part in the drive to net zero.
