Scottish Labour: Shanks presses UK government in front bench debut

Shadow Scottish Minister Michael Shanks has pressed the UK Government on food inflation in his first front bench question.

Shanks was appointed to the Shadow Scotland team by Keir Starmer earlier this week, serving with Shadow Scottish Secretary Ian Murray MP.

Food inflation in the UK is 10.1%, compared to 6.7% in Germany and 2.1% in the United States.

Speaking after Scotland Questions in the House of Commons, Shadow Scotland Minister Michael Shanks MP said:

“While living standards fail to improve in Scotland, food inflation stands at more than 10 per cent.

“That isn’t an empty statistic but a living example of the unbearable choices Scottish families are having to make - between heating or eating, or indeed neither.

“The Tories and the SNP have both failed to create a country where growth and prosperity is shared among working people, instead both governments are more interested in fighting each other.

“The change our country deserves is a Labour government that works in the interest of working people, gets a grip of inflation and grows our economy.”
