Shabana Mahmood responds to PAC report on disparities in support to black prisoners on release

Shabana Mahmood MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to a Public Accounts Committee report showing disparities in support to black prisoners released from custody, said:

“This report lays bare how the Conservatives have run our probation service and prisons into the ground after 13 years of mismanagement.  

“With 80 per cent of criminals today being repeat offenders, it is clear that this chaotic Tory government is doing little to fix the problem, at huge cost to society and victims.

“The Conservatives’ panicked plan to send fewer people to jail will put significant additional pressure on the probation service.

“Labour will sort out our probation service, deliver the prison places we need, and build a justice system that Britain can be proud of.”
