Delivering speech to the UN General Assembly on Friday
Deputy Prime Minister is leading the UK delegation
to the UN General Assembly High Level Week from today (Tuesday),
following the Foreign Secretary’s engagements on Monday and
Tuesday.
Tuesday: He will speak on behalf of the UK at the leader-level
Sustainable Development Goals Summit on Tuesday afternoon, and
attend the President Biden-hosted Leaders’ reception at the
Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. Throughout the week the Deputy
Prime Minister will have bilateral meetings with world leaders at
the UN, focusing on issues like Artificial Intelligence, global
security, economic security and supporting Ukraine.
Wednesday: He will host a business breakfast with CEOs from UK
and US firms on Wednesday. He will then speak for the UK at the
special UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine where he will
challenge Russia over its appalling actions in Ukraine, with
deliberate attacks on civilians and international food
supplies.
He will also meet Mayor of New York Eric Adams ahead of a number
of UK trade missions to the Big Apple planned in the coming
months, and to discuss collaboration on sporting events like the
USA Football World Cup in 2024.
Thursday: On Thursday he will attend meetings on the Hill in
Washington before returning to New York for a business
reception.
Friday: On Friday he will chair a Ministerial Session with
other UN member states on Frontier Artificial Intelligence safety
risks, focusing on understanding the concerns of developing
countries in relation to emerging AI technology and its
applications, ahead of the UK’s global AI Safety Summit in
November.
He will also use his speech to the UN General Assembly on Friday
to address the global challenge of AI. Calling on UN member
states to collaborate on AI safety and regulation to ensure new
technology is not misused to undermine global stability and
democracy, and ensure its benefits are spread fairly across the
developed and developing world.
Commenting on his visit to the USA, Deputy Prime Minister said:
"I'm delighted to be leading the UK delegation to the UN General
Assembly on behalf of the Prime Minister.
"The UK has always worked closely with the UN to create a safer,
healthier and more prosperous world. I look forward to using this
year to discuss the challenges and opportunities of AI, so that
the benefits of this revolutionary technology are felt fairly
across the world, and how Britain can be at the forefront of that
effort.
“Alongside this we’ll be announcing new support to tackle climate
change, boost global economic growth and prevent future
pandemics.
"But the principles of the UN are being challenged by Russia's
appalling actions in Ukraine: deliberately attacking and
terrorising civilians and seeking to hold the world to ransom by
blocking vital food supplies.
"I will be challenging Russia at the Security Council and other
nations to strengthen international support for Ukraine's
freedom."
