Background briefing
Today (Friday 15 September), Keir Starmer, leader of the
Labour Party, and , Shadow Foreign Secretary, will
arrive in Montreal, Canada, ahead of a series of engagements and
events with political leaders from around the world at the Global
Progress Action Summit.
Against a backdrop of increasing risks to British security from
chaos at UK borders, Chinese infiltration of parliament and the
cost of living crisis, Keir Starmer will talk about the 'axis of
instability' - terrorism, climate change, criminal people
smuggling gangs and threats to democracy - he believes make up
the future challenges for western economies.
Building on his visit to The Hague this week, during which
Starmer set out his plans to secure UK borders, the Labour Leader
will apply his view of how to tackle domestic security challenges
to global threats. He will say that domestic policy is
inextricably linked with foreign policy more than ever before,
and argue that only progressive internationalist politics can
rise to these challenges.
Keir Starmer’s experience as a Director of Public Prosecutions
informs his approach – that a secure future requires active,
muscular government at home and rules-based collaboration and
cooperation abroad.
Starmer will say that Conservative governments globally have
shown this to be beyond their reach, as demonstrated by the UK
Conservatives. He will say the Tories have overseen a decade of
stagnant growth and over-reliance on the likes of China, while
diminishing Britain's reputation and influence on the global
stage. He will press his plans to restore order to UK borders by
arguing that Tory Party myopia and pandering to the populist and
radical right has led to less effective international
co-operation and made it harder to tackle domestic challenges. He
will call on to finally stand up to the
wreckers in his own party - and say that a failure to do so will
see us sidelined as the future is made.
Keir Starmer will point to newly elected governments around the
world as an opportunity for the centre left to reclaim patriotism
as a progressive value. During his appearance at the summit, he
will show how his Labour government will grasp that challenge to
deliver for working people in the UK.
