Which? response to news that Tesco will introduce more own brand items in convenience stores

Please find the Which? position on this morning's announcement from Tesco that it will introduce more own brand items in its convenience stores.

From our point of view this will save customers money however own brand items are still more expensive that budget range items so Tesco could go further.

For example, Tesco's press release tells us that Tesco own brand Penne Pasta is 75p. The budget line version however is 41p.

Sue Davies, Which? Head of Food Policy, said:

“It’s a significant step in the right direction for the UK's biggest supermarket to announce it will be introducing more cheaper own brand items in convenience stores as this will save customers money, but Tesco could go further and make its very cheapest products available.

“Any action to help customers save money is welcome, however there should be no half-measures from retailers during the cost of living crisis. Which? is calling for all supermarkets’ convenience stores to provide products from their budget ranges as these are generally much cheaper than supermarket own brands.”
