Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail
Consortium, said: “The UK is the only European destination without tax-free shopping: Government must capitalise on the uptick in tourism by reintroducing VAT relief for overseas visitors to boost the UK’s attractiveness compared to other destinations and stimulate spending. Government should also seek to mitigate the impact of the slew of cost pressures continuing to bear down on the industry, including new regulation and an inflationary whack to business rates next spring.”
Andy Sumpter, Retail Consultant EMEA for Sensormatic
Solutions, commented: MONTHLY TOTAL UK RETAIL FOOTFALL (% CHANGE YOY)
UK FOOTFALL BY LOCATION (% CHANGE YOY)
TOTAL FOOTFALL BY NATION AND REGION
TOTAL FOOTFALL BY CITY
-ENDS- Methodology: All figures are now calculated using precise shopper numbers entering retail stores across the UK, whichever destination they are located. For press releases prior to May 2023, footfall figures for Retail Parks and Shopping Centres were calculated using shopper numbers to the location – not to the stores within them – therefore, would include traffic to leisure and hospitality venues, which are not the purpose of this monitor. The new method provides a better, simpler, and fully consistent means of measuring and reporting retail footfall. For this reason, we have updated the data from January 2023 using the new methodology. |
