Commenting following his topical question in the Senedd today on
the news that 61 retailers have written an open letter to the
Labour Government calling for the deposit return scheme in Wales
to exclude glass in line with the rest of the UK, Leader of the
Welsh Conservatives, said:
“The businesses that have decided to go public with their
opposition to Labour’s political decision to push their hair
brained glass deposit return scheme are absolutely right.
“Labour Ministers in the Senedd are distracted with extreme
fringe issues and making every effort to do things differently
from the rest of the UK for the sake of it. The way glass is
recycled now works well and changing this will likely reduce the
amount of glass recycled in the future.
“The First Minister has made it clear that he believes in
government bearing the costs of regulatory changes, as stated
yesterday in relation to Cardiff Airport’s security adjustments -
surely his government should therefore bear the costs that
business will inevitably have to incur from his choice to
diverge.
“It is regrettable that Labour have chosen to ignore these
legitimate concerns from businesses the length and breadth of
Wales and not commit to exclude glass, once again proving that
devolution without accountability is not fit for purpose.”
