REA statement on the shortcomings of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

Frank Gordon, Director of Policy at the REA (Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology) said:

“The REA echoes warnings from the Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is not currently supporting heat decarbonisation in an effective way.

“Government must now act on helping ensure that the scheme is attractive to drive essential decarbonisation in homes through providing greater clarity, an extension to the scheme and more suitable, updated planning laws.

“In addition, the REA also warns that there remains a subsequent policy gap around industrial and commercial heat decarbonisation, currently not addressed at all by the BUS. As with much of the Government’s decarbonisation strategies, targets must now be backed up with effective policy and action.”
