Shell's new CEO - Greenpeace comment

Shell’s new CEO, Wael Sawn, assumes his new role on January 1, 2023. Charlie Kronick, Greenpeace UK senior climate adviser, said:

“All eyes are on Sawan - will he meet the moment? Because if Shell extracts new oil and gas on his watch, it causes a ripple effect of climate crisis deaths, destruction and displacement around the world. 

“In the middle of a punishing cost of living crisis does he want Shell to be known for making billions off of fossil fuels, while paying no tax on UK production and milking £100m from taxpayers? And does he want to be opening up new oil and gas fields - going against the International Energy Agency and the UN, while millions of people are still reeling from the floods in Pakistan? Sawan could make a choice to turn Shell around; to future-proof the company and pivot to delivering cheap, clean renewables in a fair way. Ultimately Shell needs to stop drilling, and to start paying for their share of the climate damage that burning oil and gas has caused around the world.”
