Joseph Rowntree Foundation responds to plans to reverse commitment to end no-fault evictions​

Responding to reports that the Government may reverse plans to end no-fault evictions, Darren Baxter, Senior Policy Adviser at JRF, said:

“Reversing a manifesto commitment during a cost-of-living crisis would be a betrayal of renters and make little sense. 

“The proposals in the white paper have cross-party support and are popular with the public. While not perfect, these plans would mean a significant step change in the power between renters and landlords. There is simply no excuse to scrap them now.

“The continued threat of no-fault eviction leaves tenants inherently insecure. By failing to end the use of Section 21, the Government would be reneging on its promise of a “better deal for renters”, leaving them at greater risk of unaffordable rent increases with no recourse.”
