Labour’s Commission on the UK’s Future will be published in the
coming months, Ian Murray is expected to say.
Leader of the UK Labour Party, asked former Prime Minister
to undertake the Commission,
which is set to announce proposals for far-reaching reform of the
United Kingdom.
The Commission is tasked with finding new ways of cleaning up
politics and pushing power out from Westminster, so that the
United Kingdom works for every part of the country.
The Commission’s recommendations are not intended to focus solely
on Scotland, but instead to offer solutions for the whole of the
United Kingdom.
Speaking at UK Labour Conference, Shadow Secretary
of State for Scotland, is expected to say: “Our politics
can’t keep being about the false binary choice of separation
versus the status quo.
“That’s why asked former Prime Minister
to oversee a commission into
the UK’s future.
“The commission is tasked with clearing up and clearing out the
centre, so that the United Kingdom works for every part of our
country.
“It’s not going to be a powers giveaway without a purpose, but
have a plan for proper economic devolution at its heart.
“A redress of the UK economy where we unleash the talents and
contributions of all parts of the country.
“It will not just try to convince Scotland to stay, but to make
Britain such a good place to be that everyone, in all corners of
our country, will want to be part of it.
“And in doing so it will set out both a safer and more radical
offer for change than the risk of independence - the chance for a
fairer, more secure, more respected Scotland within a reformed
and modern United Kingdom.
“Conference, I’m pleased to announce that Gordon Brown’s work is
nearing completion, and that it will be launched in the coming
months.”
