The International Trade Secretary will promote the benefits of
closer trade ties between the UK and Australia and urge political
and business leaders to stand up against protectionism, in a
speech to the Australian-British Chamber of Commerce today
[Friday 2 September].

promote opportunities for UK businesses after signing the
UK-Australia trade deal, worth £2.3 billion to the UK economy.
The Trade Secretary is visiting Australia and New Zealand this
week to increase business awareness of our trade agreements and
showcase the range of opportunities for exporters in sectors such
as manufacturing, clean energy and infrastructure.
Trevelyan will address an audience of Australian business leaders
in Adelaide alongside her Australian counterpart, Don
Farrell.
The International Trade Secretary is expected to
say:
“Our friendship with Australia is more important than ever.
Together, we show the world that we will stand up for liberty,
that we fight back against tyranny, and we will defend our
societies' shared values.
“Our free trade agreement opens the doors to even greater
collaboration, and we welcome Australia’s ongoing commitment to a
free, stable and open
Indo-
Pacific region, as we continue to work closely on the UK’s
accession to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.”
The International Trade Secretary will also say how our shared
values with Australia are at the heart of how we are using the
power of free trade for good.
The UK and Australia signed a free trade agreement in December
last year and Trevelyan is working to bring the deal into force
so that businesses can start benefitting from the agreement as
soon as possible.
The Trade Secretary is the first Cabinet Minister to meet the
newly elected Australian government on Australian soil.
The UK is also in the process of acceding to the Comprehensive
and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) -
a trade bloc in the Indo-Pacific made up of 11 countries with a
combined GDP of £9 trillion.

- The UK-Australia FTA is expected to unlock £10.4 billion of
additional trade, eliminating tariffs on 100% of UK exports and
boosting the economy by £2.3 billion.
- CPTPP is a free trade area made up of 11 countries:
Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New
Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.
- CPTPP countries have a combined GDP of £9 trillion and is
home to more than 500 million people.
- CPTPP removes tariffs on 99.9% of products and joining would
secure lower tariffs for exports such as whisky and cars, which
are in high demand in the Pacific region.
