Labour’s price cap freeze will make sure 2.7 million off grid houses don’t pay a penny more this winter

Labour today confirmed that – unlike the Government who
controversially excluded off grid houses from their energy rebate –
their plans to keep energy bills low would benefit all 2.7 million
off grid homes as equally as others, saving the average household
£1,000 off their energy bill. That includes houses in rural and

Labour today confirmed that – unlike the Government who controversially excluded off grid houses from their energy rebate – their plans to keep energy bills low would benefit all 2.7 million off grid homes as equally as others, saving the average household £1,000 off their energy bill. That includes houses in rural and remote areas like the South West, rural Scotland, and the Lake District and those households that use gas canisters and kerosene to power their home. Families in rural off grid homes have faced serious challenges this year - including when thousands were left without heating or hot water to major delays in liquid gas deliveries. Off grid houses have also faced rocketing fuel costs due to the rise in cost of heating oil products, but were not given the Government’s £400 electricity rebate. It follows the party’s announcement yesterday that they would freeze the energy price cap, get costs under control for the future and help tackle inflation. Labour’s fully-funded £29bn plan would prevent the energy price cap rising through the winter, paid for by extra tax from oil and gas giants who are making eye-watering profits. The emergency package announced on Monday by Keir Starmer would reduce energy demand and lower bills in the longer term by insulating 19 million homes across the country over the next decade through Labour’s Warm Homes Plan. Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves said: “Families living in more remote areas and get their power off grid are feeling the bite of this mounting cost of living crisis. “Labour’s fully-funded plan to freeze the price cap will make sure households don’t pay a penny more this winter, saving you £1,000. “And our mission for home grown renewable energy and to insulate 19 million homes will keep bills down for the long term too. “Labour is on the side of people, and our plan funded by a windfall tax on oil and gas producer profits will help us get through the winter and beyond. “Only Labour can give Britain the fresh start it needs.” Ends Notes to editors: Please find costing and details for off grid homes and Labour’s package in attached policy briefing. Stopping energy bills from rising is a fully-funded measure, with a total cost of £29bn. That will cover:
Stopping energy bills from rising is a fully-funded measure. We'd pay for that in three ways: First, with increased tax revenues from oil and gas producers. Labour would close the Government’s absurd loophole in their Energy profits levy, backdate the start date to when Labour first called for a windfall tax to January, and accounting for higher gas and oil prices, would raise £8bn. Second, we would use the already-pledged £14bn of non-targeted funding to prevent bills from rising, giving people the security to plan ahead, rather than giving that money back in hand-outs later on. Finally, by keeping energy bills down, we'll reduce the rate of inflation, leading to a reduction in government debt interest payments of £7bn. The Warm Homes Plan and investment in sustainable British energy would be funded from Labour’s Climate Investment Pledge, a plan to tackle the climate crisis, strengthen our energy security, create good jobs in new industries, and cut bills for good. Energy Security Labour has a five-point plan for energy sustainability and security, paid for by our Climate Investment Pledge. This plan will drive down bills in the long-term, deliver energy security and sovereignty for Britain, support good jobs in every region of the country, and tackle the climate emergency.
