The SNP has said only independence can protect Scotland’s
musicians from more Brexit bureaucracy.
It follows a major report into the state of touring post-Brexit,
which warned that musicians and crew members were “facing more
costs, more complications and getting fewer opportunities” since
the UK left the EU.
MP, who toured with
world-renowned band Runrig, has slammed the UK government for
treating performers “like pawns on a chessboard” during Brexit
negotiations.
Commenting, MP said:
“The UK government’s decision to scrap touring visas was
politically motivated which treated talented performers like
pawns on a chessboard.
“Having travelled across Europe with Runrig, I know
first-hand how expensive it could have been if it wasn’t for
freedom of movement as a result of being part of the
EU.
“As outlined in this report, the scrapping of touring visas
post-Brexit has created higher costs, more complications and
fewer opportunities for musicians.
“And now, with Labour joining the Tories in declaring that there
is no way back into the European Union, it has left Scotland with
only one alternative.
“By choosing independence, Scotland can re-join our European
allies within the EU and protect our wonderful and talented
musicians in the future.”
