, Shadow Foreign Secretary are
in Berlin today (Thursday 14 July) on a two-day trip for meetings
with the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and a range of senior
German politicians and business leaders.
The visit is indicative of a future Labour government’s
commitment to grow the UK economy and Make Brexit Work.
Discussions will focus on:
- How Britain and Germany can work
together to stimulate growth and harness the opportunities of the
green transition
- What Britain can learn from the
best economic models around the world
- And how a future Labour government
will work with vital European partners to Make Brexit Work.
The Labour leader’s visit comes against a backdrop of chaos
within the UK government after the resignation of the . The Conservative Party is
rowing among themselves, Labour is focused on the national
interest and the future.
The Conservatives have presided over 12 years of low growth, with
working families now paying the price through soaring inflation,
rising prices and stagnant wages.
While candidates for the next Prime Minister are making unfunded
spending pledges and threatening to further isolate Britain on
the world stage, is cementing Labour’s plans
for growth and building relationships with European leaders.
Labour’s mission in government will be to reboot our economy and
end the cost-of-living crisis, revitalise our public services,
re-energise our communities, and rebuild relations with
international partners to ensure we are working together for a
prosperous, safe, and secure future.
On Thursday Starmer and Lammy will:
- Meet with senior members of the
newly formed SPD government to learn from their historic win as a
progressive party with a focus on growth and tackling regional
economic disparity
- Visit a business start-up hub,
meeting with entrepreneurs and the CEOs of leading business
support groups. The German government’s commitment to supporting
new business echoes Labour’s promise to make Britain a hub of new
and growing businesses
- Visit the Memorial to the Murdered
Jews of Europe to reflect and remember the millions of Jews who
were murdered in the Holocaust.
On Friday: will meet with German
Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the first meeting between the pair since
Scholz became German Chancellor.

Britain and Germany can work closely together to help boost
