Today (SUNDAY) Labour is outlining its plan to create at least
30,000 jobs in factories and the supply chain through its
commitment to part-finance three new gigafactories by 2025.
Labour’s plan would secure the manufacturing of electric vehicles
in Britain for the future.
Labour has warned that Conservative failure to invest in electric
vehicles and battery production is holding British industry back
as new research shows Germany motoring ahead of Britain by
2028. If the UK continues on its current trajectory, by 2030
Germany will have 150,000 more EV jobs, France will have 20,000
more jobs and Hungary will outpace the UK with 30,000 more jobs
in battery manufacturing and the supply chain.
Labour’s call for urgent investment in giga factories comes as
the Climate Change Committee warned "it is unlikely that vehicle
manufacturers will manufacture EVs in the UK" if "if battery
manufacturing gigafactories aren't located in the
UK."
To support the manufacturing of electric vehicles and a
vibrant domestic market, Labour will:
- Part-finance the creation of three
new, additional gigafactories by 2025, as part of the party’s
ambitious Climate Investment Pledge
- Make electric vehicle ownership
more affordable, by offering interest-free loans for new and used
electric vehicles to those on low to middle incomes;
- Accelerate the roll-out of charging
points on streets to make it easier to own an electric car
wherever you live.

Secretary said:
“Labour’s plans will bring down bills, create jobs and help
achieve net zero.
“The Conservatives' failure to harness the potential of our net
zero transition and grow our economy risks British industries
losing out to competitors abroad.
"A Labour Government will re-energise Britain’s economy by
seizing the opportunities of the future.”

Notes to Editors
- The Faraday Battery Institute
estimate that each GWH produced by a gigafactory support 500 jobs
both directly and in the supply chain. Based on the average 20
GWH giga-factory Labour's plans would therefore support 30,000
jobs.
- Analysis by the Faraday Institute
also finds that on current plans, gigafactory capacity in
Germany, France and Hungary will be 300 GWH, 40 GWH and 60 GWH
higher than the UK by 2030. Based on the above analysis of
average jobs supported, this means they'll be 150k, 20k and 30k
more jobs in battery manufacturing and the supply chain.

Figures in the CCC report also indicate that the current rate of
deployment for public charging points will have to more than
quadruple to hit the government's 2030 target, with the report
warning the current regional disparities in charging
infrastructure look to be getting worse.
