NASUWT on 5% pay rise for teachers reports

On reports teachers are set to be recommended a 5% pay rise, NASUWT General Secretary Dr Patrick Roach said:

"We have repeatedly asked Ministers to enter into talks to address the serious and damaging impact of real terms pay cuts on recruitment and retention in the teaching profession.

“It is extraordinary that the Government has chosen to delay the publication of the Pay Review Body report and refuses to engage in dialogue directly with the profession.

"The deepening cost of living crisis together with 12 years of real-terms cuts to teachers’ pay require a genuine commitment to pay restoration for teachers, starting in September.

"A typical classroom teacher is today £40,000 worse off than they would have been had their pay kept pace with inflation over the last decade.

"Talk of a pay award of 5% for the vast majority of teachers doesn’t come close to what is needed."
